And, which features have stuck around? Scroll down to discover all the major differences between the old Kindle Paperwhite and the new model. The new Paperwhite will be available to buy from October 27, while the Signature Edition will be available from November The old Kindle Paperwhite features a durable but plain design. The new Kindle Paperwhite packs a similarly inconspicuous design with slim, curved edges but the bezels around the display have been slimmed down a bit. The biggest upgrades here take place in the display.
The old Kindle Paperwhite features a 6-inch, ppi, glare-free E-Ink display designed to be comfortable on the eyes. The best Kindle Unlimited books to read this year. The Paperwhite's slightly curved backside is also much simpler than the Oasis', which offers a bump meant to be cradled with your gripping fingers. One positive design change is that there's no hump on the back where the power button and microUSB port rest.
They're just a part of the bottom edge. Both Kindles charge over microUSB, don't offer headphone jacks Bluetooth is needed for audiobooks and feature a small power button that you'll have to squint to notice.
Annoyingly, Amazon doesn't include a USB power adapter. The biggest new feature of the Kindle Paperwhite is its waterproof design, which earned an IPX8 rating.
That's up to 60 minutes of submergence in 2 meters of water. You don't need to worry about it falling into your bath, the pool or even the ocean at a beach though that's riskier, as saltwater is more corrosive.
Not only did I splash water on the Paperwhite during a photoshoot; I dropped the Paperwhite in a foot-tall bucket of tap water, then removed it after 20 minutes. The device continued to work and offer responsive page-turning, as if it had been dry the whole time. Technically speaking, the IPX8 classification means we could have waited another 40 minutes, and dunked it even deeper.
The Paperwhite's 6-inch, ppi display is just as sharp and easy to read as its predecessor's: a true example of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Our light gun rated the screen for a maximum of 78 nits, which is slightly lower than the nit Paperwhite, and well below the nit Oasis. This Kindle packs 5 LED backlights, one more than the Paperwhite which packed 4 , and seven fewer than the Oasis which packed 12 , as well as an adaptive sensor.
As I devoured a particularly tense section of Stephen King's The Outsider on the Paperwhite, I noticed a small gap between the screen and the bezel.
This gap is also there on the Kindle Oasis, and it's the kind of thing that many smartphones used to have. It's a small thing, and not that important, but it's an area in which E-ink displays can still advance.
Even in direct sunlight the page was easy to read. Overall, the Paperwhite is still a joy to use. As before, you can choose from 10 different reading fonts, 16 font sizes all the way to ones for visually impaired folks and five boldness settings. What's new is the ability to save custom settings for yourself or various members of your family who like to read with different font sizes on the same Kindle.
On top of that, there are some preset options to pick from. The "gym" setting, for instance, is a quick way to jump to a bigger, bolder font, and there's a new home screen that adds additional layers of Amazon recommendations based on your reading habits, as well as tips for new features. Additionally, there's a new home screen that adds additional layers of Amazon recommendations based on your reading habits, as well as tips for new features to try.
Amazon says the updated home experience, as well as the ability to quickly save and access reading settings, will be delivered as a free, over-the-air update to the all-new Kindle Paperwhite, the sixth-gen released in and seventh-gen Paperwhites and other newer Kindle devices "in the coming weeks. Amazon hasn't managed to integrate Alexa voice control into a Kindle yet, but with the slightly trimmer design, full waterproofing, Bluetooth and increased memory this is a satisfying upgrade.
The Kindle Oasis , which costs nearly twice as much, has a bigger, 7-inch screen, but the two devices weigh virtually the same and now have similar features. It makes you wonder if the Oasis is due for an upgrade -- or price drop -- that might give you more of a reason to buy it. The service gives you access to a million e-book titles and thousands of Audible audiobooks.
If you already own the previous Kindle Paperwhite, you won't need to rush out for this version. That said, if you like to read in the bath, around the pool or near any other body of water, the waterproofing may make this Kindle worth the investment.
The same goes if you're a big Audible user and want a dedicated device that's not your phone. It's the best value in the Kindle line , and the best overall e-book reader for most people.
